What you need to know:

  • Successful candidates will serve a maximum of eight years of two equal terms.
  • Candidates were drawn from a list of 22 applicants, the interviews will start on April 7.

Five candidates will battle it out in the race to replace Prof Njuguna Ndung’u, who exited Central Bank last month upon expiry of his term.

Prof Ndung’u had served at the helm of the banking industry regulator for seven years.

The Public Service Commission has shortlisted five candidates for the post of Central Bank Governor and four for the Chairman.

In a list published on the commission website, PSC said it could not, however, find a suitable candidate for the post of deputy governor out of a list of 42 applicants.

“The position of the Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Kenya did not attract adequate qualified applicants and therefore the need to re-advertise,” PSC said in the notice warning those who had already applied against re-applying.

The governor’s post shortlist was drawn from a list of 22 applicants with the current deputy governor Dr Haron Sirma taking the first slot on interviews slated for April 7.

Others in the shortlist include Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, former CBK deputy governor Dr Edward Sambili, Dr Peninah Wanjira Kariuki and current National Treasury economic secretary, Dr Geoffrey Ngungi Mwau.

Those for the chairman include current acting chairman Dr Mbui Wagacha, current Consolidated Bank of Kenya chairman, Dr Benson Akong’o Ateng’, Mr Nicholas Bartuiyot, who is a director at Kenya School of Monetary Studies and lawyer Jairus Mohammed Nyaoga.

SERVE EIGHT YEARS

The Public Service Commission advertised for the three posts on March 12 and it is the first time that the commission will be involved in the search of the three office holders. They will serve a maximum of eight years of two equal terms.

The three positions were advertised because the president is required to appoint them through a transparent and competitive process and with the approval of Parliament under the new constitution.

The post of deputy governor was however re-advertised after the commission failed to find a suitable candidate from among the long list of applicants.
