What you need to know:

  • The company opened its first two stores Concept at Thika Road Mall last year and another at Junction Mall.
  • The brand is now targeting to sell over a million pairs of shoes every year in Kenya in the next three years.

British high street brand Clarks said it will capitalise on retail chain Nakumatt’s presence in East Africa to tap into the regional shoe market.

The pair on Tuesday opened Clarks’ 4th outlet at the Galleria Mall, Nairobi and has plans to set up two more next month.

“We have plans to open another store at the Village Market and another at Nakumatt Mega in the next one month,” Clark International president for Middle East and Africa Irfan Porbanderwalla said during the event on Tuesday.

The company — mostly targeting the middle to high income spenders — opened its first two stores Concept at Thika Road Mall last year and another at Junction Mall.

“Since then, we have sold up to 18,897 pairs of shoes,” Nakumatt Holdings footwear product manager Robert Nyamweya said adding that the strongest marketing tool has been word of mouth.

The brand is now targeting to sell over a million pairs of shoes every year in Kenya in the next three years.

Currently, Nakumatt is in Uganda where it has opened eight branches, four in Tanzania and two in Rwanda. The chain has 36 branches in Kenya.
