The communications sector regulator is seeking a consultant to undertake a survey that will explore the best approaches to catching cyber criminals.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Tuesday invited requests for tenders “to carry out mobile survey on e-commerce and cyber prevention, detection and reporting in Kenya.”

“The consultant will do a baseline survey for us in terms of where are we in e-commerce usage and how we have been able to detect cyber-attacks, they will also showcase the number of attacks in each sector,” CA Director General Francis Wangusi said in a notice.

The 2015 Cyber Security Report states that Kenyan firms lost Sh15 billion through cybercrime in 2014, with the public sector being the most affected.

As such, the Wangusi-led regulator says it has set up a team that will focus more on monitoring cyberattacks, especially those targeted at government systems.

“At the point of receiving the report, we will know exactly what level of cyber-crime is being fought and how ready Kenya is, we will then be able to strategise,” said Mr Wangusi.

CA also revealed that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) yesterday certified its computer response incidence team after rigorous cyber security training that enables detection of cyber attacks long before they are executed.
