The national quality and standards watchdog has set up a new system that will enable businesses to apply for permits online.

The platform will also allow consumers to verify the authenticity of licences and marks of quality on products through sending a text message via mobile phone.

The new system, according to Kenya Bureau of Standards managing director Charles Ongwae, will be used for issuance of standardisation marks, clearance of imports and market surveillance.

Mr Ongwae was speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday during commemoration of the World Standards Day.

MARKET SURVEILLANCE

“The  new technology will facilitate efficient dissemination of information collected through quality assurance, import inspection, testing, market surveillance and monitoring to support compliance.”

The disclosure comes at a time when the country is fighting sub-standard products that enter Kenya through its porous borders.

Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed, who presided over the function, said the system would bolster the quality of local products as well as international trade.

Kebs has in the past 40 years signed more than 20 memorandums of understanding with various institutions both locally and internationally to improve product safety.
