Deacons Kenya has launched a book donation drive to help needy children realise their dreams.

In its second year running, the initiative will run for nine weeks and aims at collecting at least 40,000 used and unused school books.

In 2013, the retail chain’s drive realised over 7,000 books from its Sarit Centre and Capital Centre 4U2 stores.

The learning materials were donated to four schools within Nairobi County — New Star Light in Korogocho, Beyond the Vision Initiative in Tassia, Peter Kibukosya Primary School in Umoja and Our Lady of Mercy Girls High School in Shauri Moyo as part of Deacons corporate social responsibility.

READING CULTURE

The firm’s business development director, Ms Jeddidah Thotho, said the campaign is driven by lack of reading materials for children in under-privileged communities.

“Our goal is to help create a reading culture and an informed society,” Ms Thotho said.

Parents, guardians and individuals, who donate the books, will in return, receive discount coupons with values of up to 20 per cent for the learning materials donated at any of the firm’s 14 stores, she said.

Deacons Kenya runs Angelo, 4U2, Bossini, Truworths, Babyshop, Life fitness and Adidas brands.
