Kenya urged to enact legislation to shore up data security

Kenya has been urged to set up an effective legal frame that fosters data security and encourages investment in ICT and related innovations, COMESA stakeholders said on Thursday.

The COMESA delegation in Nairobi noted that despite embracing ICT, majority of COMESA countries still face bottlenecks such as lack of data protection, cyber-crime and increasing intellectual property protection for IT innovations.

Ms Sandra Uwera, CEO COMESA Business Council pointed out the urgent need for proper legislation among the 19 countries, with the view of spurring the bloc’s wealth.

Private and Public sector stakeholders gathered at the COMESA dialogue pointed out the need for member countries to establish a multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance aimed at promoting investment and competition.

COMESA member countries cumulatively export an estimated Sh200 billion worth of communications products annually.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) statistics states that Egypt, Seychelles, Kenya and Mauritius lead in terms of the sector’s growth in Internet penetration and mobile density.
