  • Salt manufacturers who have for a long time used the natural resource free of charge are expected to oppose the law

Salt companies in Kilifi will be paying for sea water they use in manufacturing the product if a Bill in the county assembly becomes law.

The Salt Firm Sea Water Bill 2014, introduced last week, seeks to compel the regional government to install metres at pumping sites on beaches.

However, salt manufacturers who have for a long time used the natural resource free of charge are expected to oppose the law proposed by Gongoni ward representative Albert Kiraga.

“The county will earn more revenue from this resource,” Mr Kiraga said.

Gongoni ward has eight firms that use sea water to manufacture salt.

Conservationists say salt production has led to the destruction of fish breeding sites.

Several meetings have, over the years, resolved that salt mining has a negative effect on the environment.
