Laptrust has started promoting public-private partnerships in infrastructure projects between the county governments and private investors.

The group which includes Laptrust, the pension scheme for county government workers in Kenya, says it will help devolved units mobilise support from the private sector in order to fund major infrastructure projects, including an urban street lighting deal it launched in partnership with German agency GIZ last week.

According to Laptrust chief executive Hosea Kili, counties require technical support in partnering with the private sector in order to bridge gaps in financing large but essential projects.

STREET LIGHTS

He added that Laptrust was already engaging the private sector to finance County Solar Street Lighting Project that aims to install one million streets lights in all the 47 counties.

“We are seeking to partner with like-minded organisations. The participating counties will come in as co-investors and Laptrust Group will be a link between the counties and the private sector.

“We’ve sent out proposals to the county governments and those willing to participate will be expected to meet set guidelines as co-investors,” said Mr Kili in Kwale County.

The counsellor and head of development cooperation at the German embassy, Lars Wilke, said the project is a best practice model to promote partnerships between private and public sector for sustainable development.
