Nairobi County Government today received four fire engines from Japan boosting the city’s capacity to deal with infernos.

Governor Evans Kidero received the second-hand fire engines from Japanese ambassador Toshitsugu Uesawa. The city's capacity to fight fire has not kept up with the speed at which it is growing.

The four engines will add to the existing fleet and improve the responsiveness of the fire brigade which has in the past been accused of failing to effectively tackle fires in the capital city.

“Japanese support for the Nairobi Fire Service is not just limited to the provision of equipment, but also the provision of technical training in Nairobi by sending experts from the Japanese Firefighters Association,” Mr Uesawa said.

Nairobi fire fighters received eight days training on how to use the equipment from their Japanese counterparts.

The four engines comprise of three engines with pump and water tanks and one is a chemical fire engine.

The city has in the last few years seen several massive fires including the Sinai fire which was caused by an oil pipeline leak, the blaze at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the fire that gutted more than half of Gikomba Market.
