Safaricom opens regional headquarters in Nyeri

Safaricom #ticker:SCOM has opened has opened its fifth regional headquarters in Nyeri County in an expansion plan that seeks to decentralise its operations.
The new office comes at a time when the demand for Internet services in the Mt Kenya region has been on the increase, with an upsurge in the number of firms, learning institutions and parastatals in the region.
The regional centre will serve customers in Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Isiolo, Samburu, Tharaka-Nithi, Marsabit and Garissa.
Other counties are Mandera, Wajir, Tana-River, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Laikipia and Nyandarua.
Safaricom chief executive officer (CEO) Bob Collymore said the shift to the counties is an indication of a need to reach and engage customers more effectively.
To further extend its retail services to customers, the telco has also opened its 46th shop at Nanyuki town.
“In additional to the shops and regional centres we have also opened 17 care desks that get us closer to the customers. We are extending those over the coming year,” Mr Collymore said.
“Decentralising our services through the Mt Kenya and North Eastern regional headquarter enables us to be closer to our customers in the 17 counties and will further give us a better understanding of our customers’ needs and will in turn allow us to provide them with products and services that better fit their wants,” he added.
New transmissions
Mr Collymore added that 160 new transmission stations will be established to enhance its 3G and 4G coverage.
The company has already rolled out its fibre for business services to more than 60 buildings in Thika, Nyeri and Meru while its fibre to the home service has reached more than 1,000 homes in Thika.
An additional nine towns in the Mt Kenya region will be integrated into the fibre business service.
“The firm also plans to further boost its voice coverage through an investment in more than 80 new 2G sites,” he said.
Besides Mt Kenya and Northeastern rgions, other regional headquarters include Nairobi East, Nairobi West, Coast, Rift and the Great Western region.
The mobile operator began implementing its regionalisation strategy two years ago in a move that that has seen services previously offered at its Nairobi headquarters decentralised to the regions.
