Six to square it out for second top CBK position as interviews begin

What you need to know:

  • Interestingly, of the 15 new applicants, only one candidate – Mr James Gituro Wahome - has been shortlisted in the final roll of those being interviewed.
  • Others in the race are three current directors of CBK - Ms Rose Detho (director in charge of strategic management) and Mr Gerald Arita Nyaoma, (director financial markets), Mr Mark Letitoiya Lesiit (director, banking Services and risk management department).
  • Former member of the central bank monetary policy committee and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated Bank non executive director Sheila Mmbijjewe is also in the race.
One John Kipkogei Birech is also shortlisted.

The Public Service Commission will on Thursday interview shortlisted candidates for the position of the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Kenya even as it appeared to break the qualification guidelines it had set for eligible applicants.

The commission had on March 1 stated that all current workers of the CBK, bankers and civil servants would be locked out of the race for position.

“No person shall be appointed as deputy governor... if he/she is a Member of Parliament or a Member of a County Assembly, a salaried employee of any public entity (except on a secondment basis) or a director, officer, employee, partner in or shareholder of any specified bank or financial institution” PSC said in a statement then.

However, three out of the six shortlisted candidates published on the PSC website, and who will be face the panel today, are directors in the regulator.

The position of deputy governor had attracted 42 applicants but the commission rejected the list saying it had not found an adequate number of candidates with the minimum requirements for the position.

The post was re-advertised and 15 candidates showed interest.

Interestingly, of the 15 new applicants, only one candidate – Mr James Gituro Wahome - has been shortlisted in the final roll of those being interviewed. The rest were picked from the initial list, from which the commission had earlier failed to get candidates meeting the minimum qualifications.

Mr Gituro is a macroeconomist and former employee of Central Bank of Kenya.

Others in the race are three current directors of CBK - Ms Rose Detho (director in charge of strategic management) and Mr Gerald Arita Nyaoma, (director financial markets), Mr Mark Letitoiya Lesiit (director, banking Services and risk management department).

Former member of the central bank monetary policy committee and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated Bank non executive director Sheila Mmbijjewe is also in the race.
One John Kipkogei Birech is also shortlisted.

Mr Gituro had also applied for the position of governor but was not shortlisted.

From the list of six, PSC will pick three and forward their names to President Kenyatta, alongside those of the governor and chairman.

The bank will have two deputy governors. Interviews for the position of chairman and governor for the regulator were concluded last week.

The names are expected to be forwarded to the president next week for appointment, which will be subject to approval from the National Assembly.
