Safaricom launches TV service

Safaricom on Friday launched its own brand of free-to-air decoders.

The company is confident that based on its 3G and 4G service, the decoders will deliver better quality content than what is currently on the market.

“Our vision is to enable a differentiated broadband internet solution that will enable our subscribers to harness the power of the internet to watch new and exciting content anywhere in the world from the comfort of their homes,” said Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

Safaricom has also written to the Communications Authority applying for a broadcast licence.

Those who buy the decoders will get free internet for six months.

Safaricom announced its intention to enter the television market in 2013, targeting the home broadband market.

The decoders will be available in Safaricom shops.
