Telkom Kenya is set to connect 200 buildings in Nairobi to its fibre network by close of the year.

This is part of the firm’s Sh4billion worth project aimed at transferring copper infrastructure to fibre optic cables. It seeks to cut maintenance budget and improve quality of its voice and data services.

Chief executive officer Michael Ghossein said the move would also reduce expenses caused by vandalism, to the tune of Sh2billion annually.

“We have seen a reduction in vandalism of cables with the transition from copper to fibre optic,” he said, adding, “so far 500 buildings countrywide are on Telkom’s (Multi Service Access Nodes) fibre network.”

He was speaking on Tuesday during the official opening of the new fibre network’s biggest switch centre, Milimani exchange point.
