There is need to invest more in the quality of Kenyan coffee for its to continue being regarded as among the world’s best.

Dorman Ltd managing director Bridget Carrington said the local farm produce was regarded as gourmet coffee and as such was much sought after in the global market.

She said there was need to reinvest in improved quality so that it can continue to fetch premium prices on the global market.

Ms Carrington spoke at a farmers open day in Karatina when the company rewarded several coffee co-operative societies and factories for excellence during the current coffee year including investment in quality.

The managing director said international coffee roasters were very keen to establish direct links with local farmers to share knowledge on how to improve the quality of coffee and adding that her company has been facilitating farm tours in Kenya for some of the roasters.

Ms Carrington presented the Dorman Cup & Shield to Tegu Coffee Factory in Nyeri after it was judged to have had the best quality coffee in Kenya during the 2008/2009 year.

The factory also received a cash award of Sh100,000 while five of its key managers received cash tokens for the win.
