Customers of a local bank have had to endure a breakdown of the ATM system for several days.

According to Dickson Maina, an Equity Bank customer, the problem started on Wednesday and persisted for the rest of the week.

Equity attributed the delays to an upgrade of the ATM system. Visits to several Equity Bank ATMs in Nairobi's Central Business District confirmed the delays, with customers experiencing difficulty accessing their funds.

Mr Maina said he had been unable to get a response from Equity's management and urgently needed to access money in order to pay his bills.

Customers have been advised to visit the branches in which they registered their accounts for assistance.

Efforts to reach the bank's Communications Manager were unsuccessful.
