Budget airline starts selling tickets in Dar

European budget airline Fastjet is now selling tickets in Tanzania ahead of its first commercial flight on November 29.

The airline, which is being positioned as an African low-cost carrier, said it would start point-to-point flights between Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro as well as Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. (Read: Fastjet moves launch date for low cost flights)

“With air fares starting from Sh1,700 ($20) before government taxes, air travel is now an affordable alternative for more people,” the airline said in a statement.

Raise capital

It has also put on sale a 2.4 per cent stake in a bid to raise Sh200 million ($2.4 million) in capital through the issue of 42,857,144 new ordinary shares.

Fastjet, which has taken over Fly540, has chosen Dar es Salaam as its first operating base in Africa, with flights from Julius Nyerere International Airport. The airline said it would add more routes in the coming weeks, both domestically and to other East African destinations.

“After Tanzania, Fastjet is planning to launch its second base in Nairobi in the coming weeks,” the statement read in part.

The airline now has three Airbus A319s as part of its fleet.
