Help lift 'Miraa' ban in Europe, Uhuru urged

Miraa traders in Malindi sell their produce.

Miraa traders want the newly elected President Uhuru Kenyatta to fulfill the promise of getting them new markets by negotiating for a lift of the ban in European markets.

Through their chairman Mr Nahason Kubai, the traders want the President to start by negotiating for a lifting of the ban in place in some of their markets especially in Europe.

They also want roads in the miraa producing areas improved saying they were incurring huge costs in reaching the market.

The famers further want the completion of the Isiolo airport be fast-tracked to help them export their produce easily.

“Isiolo airport is the nearest airport to this place and we remind our President to give it the first priority so that we can reduce the amount of time taken before the produce goes bad. Currently we have to go all the way to Mombasa or Nairobi to have it airlifted,” he said.

On the other hand, Mr Kubai hailed the Supreme Court for its verdict of upholding Uhuru’s win saying this was the right thing to do.

He termed the process as sign of mature democracy in the country. He also asked all the Kenyans to shun violence and accept the court’s decision so as to move on with other developmental programs which would enhance realisation of vision 2030.
