Motorist will now pay more for fuel consumption after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) increased pump prices on Monday.

Pump prices increased by margins of Sh2.63 per litre for super petrol and Sh0.72 per litre for kerosene. However, diesel reduced by Sh0.36 per litre.

Petrol will retail at Sh121.13 in Nairobi, diesel at Sh108.44 per litre and kerosene Sh87.

In a press statement, ERC Director-General Kaburu Mwirichia said the depreciation of the shilling and increase on import costs contributed to the increase of prices.

“Monthly exchange rate deteriorated marginally to Sh83.24 per USD in April 2012 compared to Sh82.82 per USD in March 2012,” he said.

In his statement, Mr Mwirichia hinted that prices might reduce during the next month's review.

"In the last few weeks, there has been a downward trend in the price of crude and refined petroleum products in the international market . In addition, the local currency has continued to be relatively stable against the US dollar. This is expected to have a positive impact in next price review," he said.
