Kenya Airways has increased the frequency of its flights to Kisumu as it seeks to meet a growing domestic demand.

The airline said in a statement yesterday that it would this week introduce an additional morning and evening flight on the route, raising the number of times it flies to the lake-side town to 34 per week.

“As Kenya enters the era of a devolved system of government, there is an increased need for a robust transport network linking up different parts of the country,” said KQ chief executive Titus Naikuni.

KQ has been increasing its focus on local and regional routes as demand grows from the middle class and an expanding business community.

In the quarter to December 2012, the company launched daily flights to Eldoret while introducing offerings on the Kilimanjaro route.

According to the quarter’s statistics, the number of passengers uplifted within Kenya grew 10.9 per cent to 228,119. In Africa, the number of KQ passengers grew 10.1 per cent to 516,894.

To service regional expansion of its routes, KQ is bolstering its fleet with 10 new Embraer E190 aircraft, ideal for short-haul flights, as part of its 10-year strategic plan.

Already, seven of these jets have been delivered.
