Coast set for high tourism period, record charter flights

Moi International Airport is expected to be busy next month when more than 10 European chartered airlines resume flights to Mombasa.

The airlines, which withdrew flights to Mombasa between March and April, are expected to fly back as the low tourist season ends this month.

At least 30 hotels and camps which were closed due to the low season are expected to re-open.

Return to work

More than 5,000 workers who were rendered jobless by the tourist drought are also expected to return to work.

Airport manager Yatich Kangugo said over 10 chartered airlines from Europe are expected to resume flights next month when the high season kicks off.

The airlines, he said, include those from Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and Russia.

Among the airlines are Air Berlin, Neos, Meridiana, Alitalia, Blue Panorama, Edelweiss, Jet Air, Monarch, Arkefly and  Orenair.

Qatar Airways is expected to launch scheduled flights to Mombasa on August 30, subject to government approval.
