National Oil appoints acting CEO

National Oil Corporation of Kenya (Nock) has announced the appointment Mrs Sumayya Hassan-Athmani, as the acting chief executive officer of the State owned firm.

She replaces Mr Mwendia Nyaga whose term ends on September 12, 2010.

The latter is expected to serve the company in a different capacity in the advent of an anticipated corporate restructuring.

The oil dealer’s chairman Peter Munga said the outgoing chief executive had contributed positively to the parastatal activities both in upstream and downstream businesses.

He said Mr Nyaga increased the firm’s product lines to include branded liquefied petroleum gas 'SupaGas’ and also commenced the process of turning exploration data centre into a virtual national data.

Mr Munga said Nock is searching for a new chief executive, who will be expected to take the organisation to the next level of achieving the core mandate of the corporation.

He said Mrs Sumayya’s appointment was made by the board of directors. She is currently deputy managing director.

She joined Nock in 2004 and has served as the deputy managing director since 2007.

Her previous mandate saw her spearhead development of 5 year (2008 - 2013) strategic plan.

Mrs Sumayya was the strategic leader in Nock’s successful July 2007 acquisition of 10 per cent of Kenya Shell’s retail outlets resulting in a 57 per increase of the corporation’s retail outlets from 21 to 33 outlets.

On the retail front, Nock is aiming to position itself as a market leader by achieving a market share of at least 15 per cent while growing its retail stations to at least 165 by 2013.
