The government has reduced excise tax on kerosene by Sh2.16 while diesel has gone down by Sh2.06.

However, the price of petrol remains as announced last week, when the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) increased the price of petrol by Sh9 to hit an all time record of Sh111.17 for Super petrol in Nairobi and Sh107.92 in Mombasa, up from Sh102.44 and Sh99.19 respectively.

In Kisumu, a litre of Super petrol retails at Sh113.42, while it is selling for Sh113.36 in Eldoret and Sh112.25 in Nakuru.

The price of kerosene has been reduced to in a move aimed at cushioning poor households who use paraffin for cooking and lighting.

Last week, the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) said the increment in petrol prices would “further complicate the lives and livelihoods” of Kenyans.

On Tuesday afternoon, Parliament will stop its scheduled order of business to discuss the increased cost of living brought about by the increase in the prices of fuel.

Peaceful demonstration

The motion comes on the same day the Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) has planned countrywide peaceful protests over the high cost of living brought about by the high cost of living.

“We want to have the peaceful demonstrations in all provincial headquarters, and only Embu has not confirmed so far. All the others are prepared to go ahead,” Cofek secretary general Stephen Mutoro said on Monday.

"By not reducing petrol prices, there is too little that will change. Our demands remain the unaffected. As such, our peaceful demonstrations in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri and other parts of the country will go on as scheduled," said Mr Mutoro.
