Yu to offer free SIM cards in new promotion

Telecom firm YuMobile has struck a deal with Nakumatt that will see customers get free SIM cards at the retailer’s outlets countrywide.

Consumers will have the option of choosing the mobile phone number of their choice and will also receive 25 per cent free airtime upon purchasing airtime scratchcards of at least Sh100.

According to the YuMobile country manager Madhur Taneja, the three-month promotion is expected to significantly increase the firm’s subscribers.

“We estimate that we will be able to bring in close to 100,000 new customers through the promotion,” he said during the launch of the launch today morning at Nakumatt Lifestyle in Nairobi.

Latest industry statistics from the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) indicate that despite growing mobile subscription numbers, Kenyans are talking less.

While total subscribers increased to 29.2 million, the minutes of use fell to 5.5 billion from 5.9 billion minutes posted in the previous quarter.

This has seen mobile operators launch promotions to encourage Kenyans to talk more on their networks. Although the firms are diversifying their revenue sources, voice remains essential to their bottom lines.

Mr Taneja said that unless the CCK lowers the mobile termination rate— a fee that mobile operators pay to terminate calls on each other’s’ networks— prices will remain high and Kenyans will continue to shy away from using voice services.
