The Council of Governors has said it would recommend the suspension of the Makueni County government should efforts to reconcile the county's leadership fail.

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, the chairman of the council, told a press briefing on Thursday that governors would meet on Monday to deliberate on the matter.

He said the governors, if satisfied that reconciliation cannot be achieved, would petition the President to suspend the Makueni County government.

Article 192 of the Constitution allows the President to suspend a county government in an emergency arising out of internal conflict or war.

Under the article, a suspension shall not extend beyond a period of ninety days.

On the expiry of the period, elections for the relevant county government shall be held.

GUN DRAMA

A county government consists of a county assembly and a county executive.

Five people were shot and seriously injured in a gun drama at the Makueni County Assembly on Tuesday after bodyguards opened fire during a confrontation pitting members of the county assembly (MCAs) against a mob led by Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana.

The MCAs had gathered on the grounds of the assembly, apparently for prayers, before proceeding to a public rally at which the governor was to be criticised allegedly for condoning graft.

Prof Kibwana and the group he led stormed the venue and the confrontation and gun drama ensued. His bodyguard, William Kinoti, and county chief of staff Douglas Mbilo sustained gunshot wounds.

Also injured was assembly serjeant-at-arms Brian Mutua, an Administration Police officer and a Kibwezi resident only identified as Musyoki.
