One person was beaten to death and five others injured in the Kakuma refugee camp during a fight between two rival communities from South Sudan.

Reports say the fight was sparked by an incident of an attempted rape on a 16-year-old girl.

Kakuma refugee camp manager Bernard ole Kipury has confirmed the Tuesday incident.

He said those injured had already been discharged from the International Rescue Committee Hospital.

He said the man was caught attempting to rape a girl from the rival community. He was beaten to death. No weapon was used during the fight.

The man's community then staged a revenge attack, which left five people injured.

“There was a fight over why the man was killed and police, led by Turkana West OCPD David Nyabuto, arrived and cooled the situation,” said Mr Kipury.

The Kakuma 4 camp has a population of approximately 90,000 refugees from South Sudan who live together despite the ongoing ethnic clashes in their home country.

Mr Kipury further said that leaders from both communities met and were advised to promote cordial relations.

My Nyabuto, the OCPD, ordered increased security in the camp to prevent a repeat of the fighting.
