Most areas to continue receiving rains this week, says weatherman

  • Senior Assistant Director Samuel Mwangi said several areas in coastal strip counties — Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Kwale — were likely to experience high-intensity morning and afternoon showers throughout the forecast period.
  • According to the weather experts, counties that will experience the rains include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia.
  • Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka counties will have cloudy early mornings, giving way to sunny intervals, and afternoon/evening showers in a few places throughout the week.

Most parts of the country are expected to continue receiving rains this week, says the weatherman.

The regional forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department for May 5 to 11 indicates that high-intensity rainfall is expected mainly in the Coast, parts of highlands west of the Rift Valley and around Mount Kilimanjaro.

Few places in the Lake Victoria Basin, highlands west of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley are expected to experience morning rains from today up to the end of the forecast period.

Afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms were expected in a few places yesterday. They would spread to several areas, with high intensities for the remainder of the week.

According to the weather experts, counties that will experience the rains include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia.

Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka counties will have cloudy early mornings, giving way to sunny intervals, and afternoon/evening showers in a few places throughout the week.

Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita-Taveta devolved units will experience sunny intervals in the morning throughout the forecast period. A few areas will receive afternoon and evening showers, with high intensities around Mount Kilimanjaro.

Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu counties will have sunny intervals in the mornings throughout the week.

Afternoon and evening showers, coupled with thunderstorms, were expected in a few places on the first three days. They would spread to several places thereafter.

Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties will receive morning rains in a few places during the entire week. Afternoons will be marked by sunny intervals.

From April 27 to May 3, rainfall was reported throughout the entire country, with highlands east of the Rift Valley recording the highest amounts.

Kitui recorded the highest seven- day total of 159.3 mm, and the highest rainfall in 24 hours — 82.4 mm — on April 30.

The Lodwar meteorological station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius on May 2.

The Nyahururu station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of 10.6 degrees Celsius on April 28.

The Lodwar station recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius, and Nyahururu the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius.
