Sh800m chambers gets members’ nod

What you need to know:

  • In May, the members demanded Sh400 million from the governor for construction of new chambers.
  • According to proposals by the committee, building funds will be released in tranches of Sh400 million and Sh300 million.
  • The decision to present the proposals on the floor of the House was made during a County Assembly Service Board meeting that was held on September 4.

Members of the Kisumu County assembly have passed a motion approving the building of Sh808 million debating chambers.

The motion further sanctioned relocation of the assembly’s sittings from the current premises to the county hall to give way for the work.

Leader of Majority Samuel Ong’ow said the new assembly block would include offices for all members and a gallery for the public and journalists.

He said the current chambers are not conducive for debate, affecting attendance.

“The building lacks air conditioners and fans, which has made sitting for just one hour unbearable.”

In May, the members demanded Sh400 million from the governor for construction of new chambers.

They said Sh200 million that was allocated by the county Treasury in last year’s budget for the first phase of the work was inadequate.

“The members have, therefore, recommended an adjustment of the cost to Sh400 million,” Budget Committee chairman Willis Ogonyo said.

“We have already received the design of the construction of the assembly.”

According to proposals by the committee, building funds will be released in tranches of Sh400 million and Sh300 million.

The remaining Sh108 million will be included in the 2017 budget.

Mr Ong’ow said that besides the gallery, the new block would include boardrooms for committee meetings.

The decision to present the proposals on the floor of the House was made during a County Assembly Service Board meeting that was held on September 4.

Following the approval of the motion, the sittings will be relocated to the county hall from next month.
