32 houses razed in two morning fires

Fishermen at Kinda Beach in Suba are counting losses after a early morning fire razed their houses.

Twelve houses were Tuesday burnt and property worth thousands of shillings destroyed in the 5am fire.

Engine boats and lanterns used for night fishing were among the things ruined.

The fishing community acted with speed to rescue family members with an adult and a child sustaining minor injuries.

Homa Bay County Red Cross official John Roche said the fire was spotted by fishermen returning from a fishing expedition.

The fishermen raised alarm the alarm but the fire had already spread to 12 houses.

CAUSE OF THE FIRE

The cause of the fire was not established, however, it was feared that engine fuel stored in the houses caused the fire to spread fast.

Police officers from Magunga arrived later and have since launched investigations.

They asked the fishermen to take precaution by keeping flammable substances away from their houses.

Elsewhere, property of unknown value was lost after 20 houses and business premises in Kisumu’s Bandani area were burnt down.

A resident, Mr David Opuru, who lost property, said that the fire started at around 4.30am and burnt everything to ashes.

The fire is suspected to have originated from a food Kiosk after the owner left a charcoal cooker unattended.

No one was injured even as efforts to contact the fire department bore no fruit because the fire engine was grounded.
