51 people from Chumvi Yere Village in Isiolo County have been admitted at Isiolo General Hospital after they consumed meat from a camel carcass.

Isiolo Medical superintendent Mohammud Guyo confirmed the incident saying the victims, a majority of whom were children and women complained of headaches, stomach-aches, diarrhoea and vomiting a few minutes after consuming the meat.

He said at least 11 people complained on Friday and were admitted but the number increased on Saturday morning after 40 others complained of the same symptoms.

Dr Guyo said an isolation ward has been set up to cater for the increasing number of patients with the same symptoms.

He has appealed to well wishers and charitable organisations to offer a helping hand since some of the patients were still in the village.

The Medical superintendent also said a group of specialists from the hospital have been dispatched to the village to treat those unable to be admitted at the hospital.

"The hospital is overstretched thereby creating the need to treat people close to their homes," said Dr Guyo.

He said those who have been admitted were responding well to the treatment.

Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo said plans are underway to supply food to the affected area.

Governor Doyo also said the incident occurred as drought continues to ravage the region with animals dying and urged residents not to consume meat from dead animals.
