The owner of a multi-million-shilling donkey abattoir in Naivasha Monday denied claims that he wanted to slaughter wildlife.

Mr John Kariuki said he would not slaughter zebras or any other wild animal once the abattoir was commissioned since there was enough supply of donkeys.

“I have carried out research and established where I will get animals for slaughter and the market for the meat,” said the businessman.

He said that he would only slaughter wild animals if he was licensed to do so by the government.

The businessman was reacting to claims by local leaders who want the slaughter-house closed on the claims that it was targeting wildlife animals.

Naivasha MP John Kihagi had, a fortnight ago during the homecoming party of Senator Martha Wangari, urged residents not to support the commissioning of the abattoir as it was against their culture.

The MP claimed the owner of the donkey slaughter-house wanted to finish zebras around Naivasha.

Mr Kihagi urged Kenya Wildlife Service to be wary of the abattoir owner and keep him under surveillance.

“There are no donkeys for slaughter in Naivasha and I am wondering where this businessman will be getting them,” said the MP whose sentiments were echoed by his Gilgil counterpart, Mr Mathenge Nderitu.
