Governors who fail to allow senators to chair county development board meetings risk facing impeachment, a group of legislators has warned.

Three senators and 10 MPs have said they would work with members of county assemblies to expose governors who misuse funds.
Speaking in Nandi County on Sunday, the lawmakers said the Senate would recommend that governors who fail to appear before the Senate over use of funds be impeached by county assemblies.

At the same time, Senators Charles Keter (Kericho), Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) claimed some governors were “bankrolling Cord to push for the referendum”.

REFERENDUM PUSH

Mr Murkomen criticised Nandi Governor Cleophas Lagat for supporting the referendum push.

“Lagat should come clean and state why he supported Cord on the national referendum,” he said.

During a governors’ meeting in Nakuru last week, Dr Lagat, who was out of the country, sent his deputy Dominic Biwott with a message that he fully supported the referendum call spearheaded by Council of Governors chairman Isaac Ruto.

Dr Lagat will convene a meeting this week for Nandi leaders to decide the way forward on the referendum.

Mr Murkomen praised Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago for withdrawing from the Pesa Mashinani campaign championed by Mr Ruto.

“It is not yet time for a referendum because the implementation period is not over,” he said.
