Arsonists raided Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital Sunday morning and set the administration block and the laboratory on fire.

Crucial documents like staff records, land ownership, crucial, correspondences and the master plan of the new referral institution and CCTV cameras were all destroyed.

Laboratory equipment were, however, spared as only the building’s roof and the storage room got destroyed.

Laikipia County secretary John Mwaniki said the arsonists struck at around 5.30am and gained entry by cutting an electric fence.

“Definitely this is an attack on the institution but we will not be cowed by any action. We will assess the damage and see how we can address it,” Mr Mwaniki said.

Security officers who were at the gate got distracted after an alert came to their station indicating that the fence had been destroyed.

Members of staff under supervision of chief officer for Health Dr Timothy Panga were making frantic efforts to shift laboratory to another part of the hospital.
