More than Sh83 million belonging to the Kwale Water and Sewerage Company cannot be accounted for, a report by the auditor general has revealed.

The report, which was tabled in the county assembly, covers the period ending June 2012. It was adopted by members of the assembly.

Moving the Motion of adoption, Public Investments and Accounts Committee Chairman Patrick Mangale said the firm claims the amount was spent on staff and other expenses, but it does not have documents to back the expenditure.

More than Sh21 million that was supposed to be paid as electricity bill cannot also be accounted for.

Seconding the Motion, Mkongani ward Representative Ndoro Mweruphe said the company was established politically without proper structures.

He added that the firm is under the control of the Coast Water and Sewerage Company and cannot make simple decisions affecting Kwale residents.

NOT COMPETENT

“These are issues that need to be addressed because Coast Water has been overburdening Kwale Water. It even sets a limit on the amount of water to be used,” he said.

At the same time Chengoni/Samburu Ward Representative Josphat Chirema questioned the competency of Kwale Water Managing Director Nyundo Katembo.
