The Embu county government is under investigations over allegations that it bribed auditors to doctor audit reports.

Officials from the Auditor General’s office Tuesday collected documents from the county assembly as they started investigating claims the county executive gave the auditors a Sh10 million bribe.

Led by Deputy Auditor General John Kagondu, the officials held a closed-door meeting with county assembly Speaker Kariuki Mate, and collected copies of hansard reports on the bribery claims.

“Mr Kagondu came for clarification on some of the allegations that were made at the county assembly. He said the office has not been compromised, and even if there have been any attempts, those attempts have not been successful,” said Mr Mate.

He urged Embu residents to be patient and wait for the auditors’ report.
“The work of the Auditor General is not to criminalise but to make right the systems which are weak,” he said.

“The county assembly is a political institution and if an MCA raises a matter on the floor of the House, the onus is on those concerned to address the matter,” he said on Tuesday.

Governor Martin Wambora, however, denied the claims and urged leaders to provide evidence of impropriety.
