Fifty sites in Mombasa have been shut down in Mombasa as developers have flouted rules, according to the National Construction Authority.
Senior investigations officer Chrispus Ndinyo said the property developers have been ordered to apply for approvals.
He said officials visited some sites at King’orani, Majengo as well as Tudor estates and found people living in buildings under construction oblivious of the danger that lurks.
Mr Ndinyo said in some buildings, businesses were operating on the ground floor while construction was ongoing on the upper floors.
He said the sites would remain closed until proper documents are obtained from the authority. The official warned those who ignored the directive that they would be taken to court.
ADHERED TO MINIMUM TO STANDARDS
Mr Ndinyo said developers are not adhering to the minimum rules for construction such as providing proper safety gear for workers, registering contractors and securing unfinished buildings to block public access.
“We cannot allow people to act with impunity and yet there are stipulated rules to be followed while undertaking constructions. We will deal with those who flout the law,” he warned.
“Buildings under construction have been collapsing, resulting in deaths largely due to lack of adherence to statutory and other regulatory requirements, poor workmanship and gross disregard for human life. We will not allow this to continue,” he added.
The officials who were accompanied by police officers have so far done inspections in Majengo, Tudor, Mwembe Tayari, Kizingo, Bondeni, Nyali, Bombolulu, Bamburi, Kiembeni and Mtwapa. Mr Ndinyo said contractors at Majengo and King’orani are the most notorious.
