What you need to know:

  • Mr Oyamo sneaked into his mother-in-law's house on Thursday night when the fatal confrontation ensued.
  • Mr Oyamo is alleged to have stabbed to death his young brother-in-law when he tried to intervene.
  • The conflict started after the funeral when Mr Oyamo's wife refused to travel to her matrimonial home.

Police are pursuing a man who stabbed to death his brother-in-law and seriously injured his mother-in-law Thursday night in Pundo Kalanya village in Homa Bay County.

The man, Mr Erick Oyamo, is also wanted for questioning over the "mysterious" death of his two-year-old boy.

Mr Oyamo is said to have sneaked into his mother-in-law’s house Thursday night demanding to know why she had not allowed his wife, Ms Risper Omondi, to go back to their matrimonial home after attending her father’s funeral.

After the burial, relatives said that Mr Oyamo insisted that his wife accompany him back to their Sori home, but she declined.

Following his wife’s refusal to accompany him, Mr Oyamo is said to have forcefully taken away the boy, only for him to show up two days later claiming that the child had died. He then demanded that his wife accompany him to their home for the child’s burial.

A relative of the slain boy, Ms Maureen Aketch, told the Nation that Ms Omondi’s family had barred her from accompanying him, adding that the couple had been embroiled in a domestic row for some time.

Mr Oyamo, a boda boda operator, then sneaked into his mother-in-law’s home at night to confront her and look for his wife.

When his brother-in-law, Mr Otieno Omondi, a Standard Eight pupil at Pundo Kalanya Primary School, tried to intervene, he stabbed him several times in the stomach before taking off after villagers responded to the screams.

“Upon the arrest of the assailant, who has gone underground, we will investigate the circumstances under which the two-year-old child died,” said Homa Bay OCPD Ochorokodia Okadie.
