Activities at the Nyahururu Law Courts were disrupted Tuesday morning following a bomb scare.

The court premises were quickly evacuated as scared magistrates, prosecutors, court staff and members of the public scampered for safety.

Police officers who arrived soon after being alerted by members of the public cordoned off the area while persons who had been brought for hearing of their cases were whisked away in police lorries.

Nyandarua County Commander Mr Hamisi Mabeya told the media that there were two bags that lay idle outside two courtrooms which were suspected to contain explosives.

“We have contacted bomb experts from Nakuru and Nyeri to come and clear the place before activities can return to normal,” said Mr Mabeya.

DISMISSED CLAIMS

He dismissed claims that five foreigners arrested over the weekend were behind the bomb scare.

“They were Ugandan hawkers who were found with expired identification documents, and were to be charged for being in the country illegally,” he said.

Senior Principal Magistrate, Mr Dennis Mikoyan, who moved from court to court asking everyone to vacate and urging the large crowd of onlookers to keep off noted that the scare was a set back to the day’s activities.

“We have to set dates for mention of cases and suspend the taking of pleas to later hours to allow the police to clear the place,” he said.

He asked accused persons who were out on bond to go to an adjacent construction site to receive their services.

Police promised to clear the place by Tuesday afternoon.
