A bridge over Ewaso Nyiro river is under repair to connect Samburu and Isiolo game reserves and boost tourism.

The rehabilitation will cost Sh60 million and will be completed in 45 days, according to Governor Godana Doyo.

The bridge is important for tourism. Visitors to Samburu Game Reserve and Buffalo Springs will use the bridge to get to their destination after landing at Loruko airstrip.

Mr Doyo expects the area to earn between Sh25 million and Sh40 million annually from tourism.

He was optimistic that the rehabilitated bridge would revive the tourism sector.

It will also enable residents of Loruko to access markets, treatment and other essential services.

The residents were unable to use the bridge after raging floods eroded land around it two years ago and left it surrounded by water.

They said their lives would be back to normal once the work is complete, since crossing the crocodile-infested river would no longer be a problem.

Mrs Josephine Lenaibor said expectant mothers could not easily access a health centre.

Mr Halkano Mohamed said he once fell into the river and was injured as he tried to help a tourist cross the damaged bridge.
