A criminal investigations officer was on Friday night shot dead in Liboi in Garissa County, a small town bordering the war-torn Somalia.

Confirming the incident, North-Eastern region CID boss Musa Yego said the officer was shot by unknown people while he was coming from a mosque on Friday night.

Mr Yego said although no arrest has been made, police have launched a manhunt for the suspected attackers.

An eyewitness also told the Nation that the officer—only identified as Siraj – was on his way to his residential place before heavily armed men opened fire, killing him instantly in the 8.30pm incident.

Garissa County has suffered similar attacks in the past targeting security and government officials, which are believed to be orchestrated by Al Shabaab due to its proximity to Somalia.

In June, heavily armed men attacked Abdi Sugow area in Liboi, even though no one was injured during the fierce fire exchange.
