The County Assembly of Taita-Taveta is considering introducing severe anti-defilement laws, such as castration.

The Bill, said to be in its early stages, is meant to arrest the runaway defilement cases in the region.

It is intended to ensure that there is a law stipulating the consequences of defilement, a menace the county leaders say is running out of control.

Speaking over the weekend in Voi Town, assembly Majority Leader Crowell Baridi said that time had come to take drastic action against defilers, whom, he said, targeted school children and other underage girls in the region.

He said that the Bill would insist that men convicted of defilement be castrated to act as a deterrent to others with the inclination to become sexual predators.

Mr Baridi said that it was tragic that cases of defilement were becoming widespread while nothing much seemed to be done to discourage the trend.

“There is a need for a law that will spell out the stiff consequences of defiling children and other minors in this region. It is time for us to stand up and deal decisively with these sexual pests,” he stated.
