Authorities will take severe action against anyone found fuelling conflict between communities, Governor Godana Doyo has warned.

He urged leaders and residents to be in the frontline preaching peace and unity in the county.

The governor said efforts were under way to unite the people following last week’s clashes between the Samburu and the Turkana at Loruko, in which 10 people were killed.

Four others sustained serious gun shot wounds.

“The county government will also speed up dialogue between the two communities in order to come up with a home-grown solution that will end the conflict.”

Mr Doyo spoke Monday in Isiolo during the distribution of relief food to families displaced by the clashes.

More than 2,000 people received rice, beans, cooking oil and maize flour.

The beneficiaries were from Kiwanjani, Loruko, Attan, Lowangila, Manyatta, Kona, Attir, Maendeleo and Chumvi Yare villages.

The governor said the county government was looking for a long-term solution to ethnic animosity in the region.

“All communities in this county should remain calm and embrace peaceful coexistence.”

The county boss asked the displaced families to return to their homes, saying, security had been beefed up.

Perennial clashes in the region could delay the implementation of various projects, which are intended to improve the county’s economy.

The government is building a resort city and an international airport in Isiolo to take advantage of the Lamu Port and South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport corridor project, which is under way.

Mr Doyo said peace was necessary for the county and the national government to complete the mega-projects within the stipulated time.
