Envoy pledges Sh6bn growth plan for county

The British Government will spend Sh6 billion on development projects in Turkana County.

British High Commissioner Christian Turner said the money would be disbursed over the next five years to boost food supply, as Turkana has suffered recurrent drought. Some of the money would be used to buy food.

“We shall also support education as well as improve the nutrition of women and children,” Dr Turner said.

IMPROVE LITERACY

Britain would support 10,000 children in low-cost boarding schools to improve literacy.

He said Tullow Oil and Exploration Company would spend Sh400 million this year on providing social amenities. The firm would honour the agreement to give two thirds of the jobs to Kenyans.

The envoy said that the British Council grants 30 scholarships a year, 15 of which are given to Turkana County.

Dr Turner said the British Government would also encourage tourists to visit the area.
