St Andrew’s Anglican Church lost 11 of its members in the recent attacks by Al-Shabaab militants, and many of the surviving members have fled to a Kenya Defence Forces camp, according to Mr Elijah Kinyua, a lay minister at the parish.

Of the 11, nine were killed in the shooting at a quarry, where 36 lives were lost, while two were among the 28 non-Muslim passengers who were killed by militants who waylaid a bus travelling to Nairobi, he said.

Mr Kinyua spoke on the sidelines of the Kenya Anglican Men’s Association’s conference at Shanzu Teachers College in Mombasa.

He said many Christians were fleeing the region for fear of terrorist attacks.

“We are in fear,” he said in an interview with the Nation at the conference. “After the seminar, I will go back because I have to close the church.”

Meanwhile, the head of the Anglican Church, Archbishop Eliud Wabukala, urged the international community to assist Kenya in fighting the war against terrorism.

“Terrorism aims at ending Christianity and by extension Islam,” he said. The bishop urged the two religions to unite in fighting terrorists, whom he accused of promoting atheism.
