National Land Commission (NLC) has launched an investigation into the ownership and allocation of a nine acre piece of land in Nyali alleged to have been grabbed by unscrupulous individuals in government.

NLC Chairperson Muhammad Swazuri while visiting the school to get the facts said they had received complaint from Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) and Nyali Primary School management.

“We have come here as per the constitution on Kenya, in response to a complaint from Nyali Primary school that the land adjacent to the school may have been grabbed,” Dr Swazuri said.

Dr Swazuri said that three out of the nine acre parcel of public land next to the school had been encroached upon.

He added that the school hoped to upgrade to a Secondary school and had also applied to be allocated land in 1991.

The Chairperson said the commission will investigate the circumstances in which the remaining six acres were given to private developers and not the school despite them having applied.

“The school noticed that the land which they were hoping would be allocated to them was being developed by private individuals in 2013 and lodged a complaint. Ideally priority should have been given to the school since there are no high schools in Nyali,” he said.

According to the school Principal Mr John Kombo, the parents were even ready to contribute money to purchase the piece of land being public land.

The NCL Chair assured the school management that the commission will find the history about it and explore possibilities of channelling the land back to the school.
