Confusion as plot to oust majority leader thwarted

What you need to know:

  • “I also have issues with the majority leader, but I would not want him to be ejected that way. Let members table written allegations explaining why they have no confidence in him,” he said.
  • Another meeting chaired by Ms Njoroba picked Mr Simon Komu who was impeached last year over alleged embezzlement.

A meeting convened by ward reps allied to TNA to oust Majority Leader Patrick Chege ended in disarray after it was disrupted.

A group opposed to the plot disrupted the proceedings and whisked away the Chief Whip Charles Arahuka who was presiding over the session.

The reps against the impeachment tore up the minutes of the meeting, which had been written by Deputy Chief Whip Ann Njoroba. Mr Arahuka was forcibly taken to his car and driven away.

A group led by Mr James Njenga (Kiambu Town) had moved a Motion of no confidence against Mr Chege, accusing him of incompetence and conflict of interest.

During the stormy meeting held at the county assembly chambers on Wednesday evening, Mr Njenga said 43 out of 82 members had signed up in support of the impeachment.

However, he could not explain what Mr Chege had done to warrant his removal.

Ngewa MCA Karungo Thangwa termed the motive malicious.

WRITTEN ALLEGATIONS

“I also have issues with the majority leader, but I would not want him to be ejected that way. Let members table written allegations explaining why they have no confidence in him,” he said.

Mr Thangwa Thursday wrote a protest letter to the party coordinator Gladys Chania seeking her intervention.

Ms Florence Njeru (nominated) said it would be unfair to impeach Mr Chege based on allegations.

The Sergeant-at-Arms moved in to restore order after the situation turned chaotic.

Another meeting chaired by Ms Njoroba picked Mr Simon Komu who was impeached last year over alleged embezzlement.

However, Mr Mburuti Kinuthia (Komothai) said they would not consider Mr Komu as their Majority Leader, saying his election was null and void.
