A senator has claimed the border row between Kisumu and Vihiga counties over Maseno Township is a scheme by Jubilee Alliance to divide local communities for political gains.

Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o claimed the ruling coalition is seeking ways to consolidate support in western Kenya, which is predominantly Cord’s stronghold.

In a statement, Mr Nyong’o said dragging the name of Cord leader Raila Odinga into the matter demonstrated the ill motives of the promoters of the “evil agenda”.

The Senator said they had already taken constitutional initiatives to address any boundary issue in Kenya.

Business and institutions such as Maseno University, Maseno School as well as government agencies in the area risk being disrupted if the conflict escalates.

“As the Senator for Kisumu County and an avowed Kenyan nationalist, I would like to caution all CORD supporters in Vihiga and Kisumu counties not to be trapped by our detractors into an unnecessary conflict in Maseno.

“They want division in the CORD family so that they can harvest the spoils,” Mr Nyong’o said.

He further appealed to communities around Maseno to continue living in peace.

“Let the Senate initiative not be derailed by those seeking populist political fortunes,” he said.

Already, leaders from the county have warned against attempts to divide communities in the area.

Kisumu County commissioner Erastus Ekidor on Thursday asked the leaders to allow constitutional bodies among them IEBC to deal with the matter.

“Let the IEBC, mandated to drawn boundaries, deal with the matter,” said Mr Ekidor.

Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma said the issue will be resolved as he has initiated talks with his Vihiga counterpart Mr Moses Akaranga.

The row started following claims by residents of Maseno that they were not being served well by Kisumu County government yet they pay taxes.
