Kwale County Commissioner Evans Achoki has dismissed claims that members of the Mombasa Republican Council were regrouping to disrupt the 2017 General Election.

Rumours had been spreading that the secessionist group was planning to rebrand itself to Government of Mombasa.

Speaking in his office on Thursday, Mr Achoki said the group was inactive, attributing it to public awareness campaigns.

Authorities were closely monitoring the group’s activities and anyone making plans to revive it would face the full force of the law, he added.

“People should have faith in the county government by focusing on development,” he said.

He urged the county’s residents to overcome the fear of the unknown and air out their grievances to county government officials for action.

He asked leaders to openly speak about the issue to restore confidence among the public.
