The Kisumu County Government plans to build houses, a hotel, a mall and an international conference centre worth Sh16 billion.

Governor Jack Ranguma said discussions with investors from the United Kingdom and line ministries in the National Government are underway.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Mr Ranguma said a deal would be signed after the talks and the project would begin in a few months.

He said Kisumu is a growing business hub, and the county government would work with partners to improve facilities.

Mr Ranguma said negotiations for the mega projects are nearly complete, adding that the public would be involved since large tracts of land would be required.

The governor said the success of last week’s Devolution Conference in Kisumu inspired his government to step up efforts to revive tourism.

“Improved tourism would create employment. We want to increase investment in Kisumu since the money we receive from the National Government is not enough for effective implementation of devolution,” Mr Ranguma said.

He also said the county government would explore medical tourism, which would be marketed together with other tourist attractions like Lake Victoria and Kit Mikayi.

The governor said he would request the US embassy to include a visit Kisumu in the itinerary of US President Barack Obama who would be coming to Kenya in July.

“We look forward to him delivering a lecture at Tom Mboya Labour College,” Mr Ranguma said.

The governor lauded residents for welcoming President Uhuru Kenyatta during the three-day conference attended by 6,000 delegates.

He announced that the First Lady would deliver a “Beyond Zero” ambulance in Kisumu on Thursday.
