Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has issued a directive to the governors of Wajir and Mandera to record statements over clashes in the two counties.

This comes in the wake of the deaths of at least 20 people in renewed violence on the Wajir-Mandera border on June 21.

In May, 13 people were killed in violence between two rival clans.

In the last month alone, more than 40 people have died and hundreds of people displaced by violence in Mandera and Wajir counties.

Leaders from the two counties had hoped a team of surveyors sent to demarcate the Mandera-Wajir boundary would reduce tension between the Garre and Degodia, as their grazing areas will be clearly defined.

During a security meeting in May, Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamad asked the national government to urgently send a team of surveyors to help mark the boundary between the two devolved units.
