Deputy governor’s powers clipped

What you need to know:

  • He told the county executives that they have to be answerable to him. He said from now on, each one of them should have a work programme approved by him or chief officers.
  • The governor told those interested in politicking to leave. “You can play politics but not with the people of Nyandarua in the remaining three years. We have to be serious and move forward,” he added.

Governor Daniel Waithaka Monday stripped his deputy of executive duties he had assigned him last month.

Mr Waithaka also announced yet another Cabinet reshuffle, the second in a month. He said the embattled Waithaka Mwangi Kirika will remain Deputy Governor but without a ministerial portfolio.

The deputy governor has been doubling up as the County Executive for Lands, Housing and Physical Planning.

In the new line-up, the governor brought in three new faces and appointed Ms Agatha Thuo — who has been the County Executive for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries — as the new County Secretary.

Monday’s changes appear to be aimed at consolidating the governor’s authority. He warned the team that he will not entertain politicking at the expense of service delivery.

Announcing the changes in the presence of Speaker Ndegwa Wahome and several county executives, Mr Waithaka said the reshuffle has been necessitated “by the fact that we appear not to be delivering services to the people of Nyandarua and that has to stop”.

ANSWERABLE TO HIM

He told the county executives that they have to be answerable to him. He said from now on, each one of them should have a work programme approved by him or chief officers.

The county boss said his office will check the work programme on a bi-weekly basis.

The governor told those interested in politicking to leave. “You can play politics but not with the people of Nyandarua in the remaining three years. We have to be serious and move forward,” he added.

Among the new faces is former Rift Water Service Board MD Peter Gathimba, who becomes the County Executive for Tourism, Wildlife and Sports.
Mr Gathimba vied for the governor seat in the county in the last election and lost.

The Lands Housing and Physical Planning docket was given to newcomer Peter Thabanja.

Another new face is Mr Frank Muchina. He will head the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries docket.
The new appointees will, however, have to await vetting by a county assembly committee before taking office.
